San José Cieneguilla

Nestled in the beautiful Sierra Sur region of Oaxaca, the ejido of San José Cieneguilla, belonging to the municipality of San Sebastián Río Hondo, pays homage to Saint Joseph, its patron saint, and to the nearby wetlands that surround the territory. This evokes the community's close connection to the land and water, and its patron saint festival is celebrated from May 1st to 5th. Over the years, San José Cieneguilla has preserved a rich heritage from the Zapotec culture, reflected in its festivities, traditional agricultural practices, and the consumption of wild mushrooms, which has allowed it to maintain a sustainable balance with its natural environment.

La Cerbatana hill, the most important in the ejido, has witnessed ancient rainmaking rituals where prayers were offered to ensure health and abundant harvests. Although these traditions have transformed over time, some families still travel to the Quiechapa spring to make requests for healing and well-being, keeping alive the sacred connection with the land. Another site of great spiritual significance is La Postema Hill, considered sacred by various communities in the region.

Since 2021, San José Cieneguilla has taken a significant step forward in environmental conservation, committing to the sustainable management of its forests and participating in the voluntary carbon market with Yaax Carbon. Through the implementation of updated forest inventories and sustainable practices, the community not only protects its natural resources for future generations but also strengthens its commitment to preserving its lands, promoting community development that respects both nature and its cultural identity.
