Nestled in the majestic mountains of the Sierra Sur of Oaxaca, San Pablo Coatlán is a Zapotec community with deep historical roots dating back to pre-Hispanic times. With a population of approximately 7,400, this community has preserved an invaluable tradition of communal land ownership, where the land is considered a shared resource and managed collectively for the benefit of all.

Since 2021, San Pablo Coatlán has undertaken an ambitious forest conservation project through carbon credits, in collaboration with Yaax Carbon. This effort not only ensures the preservation of its vast forests but also safeguards its invaluable biocultural wealth and the ecosystem services they provide.

This commitment to the environment is complemented by investing 80% of the resources generated from carbon sales in forest health and care, while the remaining 20% ​​is allocated to projects for the development of the community itself.
